Puzzle Pieces
My mom asked me to post a picture of a project I did for my music therapy internship presentation. I had a client with dementia and she told me the same nine things over and over during our sessions. I decided to start tallying every time she told me a story, talked about her family, talked about her newly acquired whistling ability (or "whistling business" as she called it), and any time she had a laps in memory (couldn't recall a word, the rest of a story, got family members mixed up, or confused me with someone else). I wanted to see a visual of her thoughts and her what her dementia looked like. I left the key so you could see what each color means. After I finished painting the puzzle I realized how appropriate a symbol it was for her memory. Things are missing and disjointed and the gaps were getting bigger the longer we spent time together. Also, her memories seemed scattered and random at times but at other times they appeared to be related and fluid to the conversation or music we were singing. I never knew what person I was going to make music with that day.
