Oquirrh Mountain Temple

This morning Penny and I got to serve as Hospitality Hosts at the new Oquirrh Mountain Temple. We got there and no one was around. We gathered our group in the church RS Room across the street and had our devotional. As we were finishing one the Steering Committee leaders came and took us over to the temple. There is a big tent all nicely decorated and furnished for use as a Reception tent. Our job is to keep the food area replenished and to supervise our helpers in busing the tables, etc. There were two General Authorities and their families going through the temple. The leader told us that President Monson was coming with his family and friends at 2 PM. Our shift was from 11 AM to 4 PM. So we went on a tour of the temple. It was awesome. What a great spirit! Two stories that were told to us impressed me.
The first is about a woman who drove her 30 year old Down’s Syndrome son on a date with a Down’s Syndrome girl friend. On the way back they were driving on the Bangerter Highway and passed the temple. Her son mentioned that he really liked the building especially the angels all around it. She thought he meant the Angel Moroni on the temple spire. He said that he liked that one too, but he like the ones in the white robes that were all around the temple and on the grass too. Later after dinner he still maintained that he had seen angels on the grounds.
Last Thursday evening, a car pulled up in the parking lot and a family consisting of a grandfather, grandmother, their adult children and some grandchildren got out. There were on vacation from Ireland. They had been driving down I-15 and had seen the temple in the distance. It took them 20 minutes to find it. President LaMonyon (stake president) was there and since no General Authorities had come for a tour he took them through. All the while he explained to them why we build temples. In the sealing room they were deeply touched by the message of being sealed as a family for time and all eternity. The youngest granddaughter gave Pres. M a big hug at the end and said that she wanted to join the church. Her grandfather took her aside and talked to her telling her that they already had a church. Some great seeds of the spirit were planted in the little Irish girl.
It was a great experience. President and Sister Monson arrived a little after 2 PM and went through the temple. Just as they were coming into the reception tent our shift was over and we were sent home. We did not get to see them. But this was a great experience. There is a special, wonderful, feeling in this temple and it’s not even dedicated yet. It is so beautiful and open inside. Many rooms filled with natural sunlight.
